WASHINGTON, April 8 — The American Red Cross Board of Governors has announced the approval of Gail J. McGovern as the next President and CEO of the American Red Cross. She will officially be welcomed to the Red Cross on June 23.
McGovern is a successful business executive. She has held top management positions at AT&T Corporation and Fidelity Investments and has been recognized twice by Fortune magazine as one of the most powerful and influential women in corporate America. Currently, she is a member of the faculty of Harvard Business School, teaching marketing in the MBA and Executive programs.
McGovern is also a proven fundraiser and we are delighted that she will put those particular skills to work at the Red Cross. She currently co-chairs a campaign for The Johns Hopkins University that set out to raise $2 billion in seven years; they not only exceeded their goal two years ahead of schedule but they have now raised the bar to $3.2 billion!
As the American Red Cross begins this new chapter, the American Red Cross of Lee County continues its mission locally. For over 90 years, the Red Cross of Lee County has continued to grow and improve its disaster response and emergency preparedness services. With a volunteer-to-paid staff member ratio near 40-1, the Lee County Red Cross prides itself as sound stewards of funds donated by generous Lee County residents.
In the last fiscal year the Lee County chapter:
- Responded to 158 single-family fires
- Provided disaster preparedness education to over 5,000 individuals
- Trained 5,500 residents in life-saving skills like CPR and first aid
- Taught 25,000 people live-saving water safety skills
- Aided 345 military families in correspondence through our Service to Armed Forces program
