HIV/AIDS Programs

The American Red Cross educates people on how to stop the transmission of HIV, encourages people to respond in informed ways to people who have HIV, and helps people apply the facts about HIV to their own behavior. These goals are accomplished through our easy to use educational programs designed to reach a variety of audiences AIDS is a leading cause of death among Americans aged 25 to 44. By learning the facts about HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and acting on them, we can protect ourselves and others.

The Basic HIV/AIDS Program uses a variety of learning techniques in sessions specially designed for your community to help people--

  • Become aware of HIV transmission and prevention.
  • Gain accurate knowledge of HIV and AIDS facts.
  • Personalize the facts so that they become more meaningful to them.
  • Develop decision-making skills to avoid the risks of HIV infection.
  • Explore advantages in deciding to postpone sex or not to use drugs or alcohol.
  • Develop skills to reduce their risk of HIV infection when having sex or when injecting drugs.

Fundamentals

Participants in these sessions--

  • Learn the facts about HIV and AIDS and discuss them.
  • May develop a personal "contract with myself" to choose specific ways they will apply the facts about HIV to their own behavior.
  • Explore in greater depth a topic of special interest to the group, such as women and HIV or parent-child communication.
  • Watch and discuss a video about people living with HIV or AIDS.

Sessions can be specially geared toward young people aged 13 and older. For example, heartfelt letters written by a young woman with HIV and her mother can be used to help participants personalize information about HIV transmission and prevention. Or, a guest speaker, such as a young person living with HIV or AIDS can speak with the group about their experiences and answer questions.
